Nasdaq breaks record ahead of Apple, Microsoft profit this week

Nasdaq Composite soared to a record high on Monday morning, with investors gearing up for a busy week of tech gains.

The high-tech Nasdaq Compound was up 1.06%, while the S&P 500 was up 0.28%. The Dow Jones Industrial Average, in turn, fell 134 points, or 0.43%.

Elsewhere, Merck & Co. has ended its search for a COVID-19 vaccine and will instead focus on developing therapies for those who already have the disease.

The Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine was approved for emergency use in Australia and AstraZeneca Plc told European Union officials that production problems would result in the delivery of 60% less vaccines than promised in the first quarter.

Meanwhile, AMC Entertainment raised $ 917 million in debt and equity, announcing that the troubled film network would declare bankruptcy. The company said the funds extend its financial lead “deeply into 2021”.

GameStop’s shares rose further on Monday, with short sellers continuing to rush out, after short interest recently reached more than 150% of the outstanding shares. The shares rose 226% from the close of January 12 through Friday.

In commodities, West Texas Intermediate crude dropped 9 cents to $ 52.18 a barrel and gold added $ 8.20 to $ 1,864.40 an ounce.

European markets fell across the board, with Britain’s FTSE 100 weaker at 0.92%, while France’s CAC 40 and Germany’s DAX 30 fell 1.22%.

In Asia, China’s Shanghai Composite index rose 0.49%, Japan’s Nikkei 225 rose 0.67% and Hong Kong’s Hang Seng index rose 2.41%.
