Indianapolis shooting: Pregnant woman among 6 killed in “mass murder”

Six people were killed, including a pregnant woman, in a shootout inside a home in Indianapolis earlier on Sunday, reports CBS affiliate WTTV. Police said a young man was also hospitalized in critical condition. Indianapolis Mayor Joe Hogsett and Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department chief Randall Taylor described the shooting as a “mass murder” during a news conference, according to WTTV.

The shooting took place at 3500 Adams Street early Sunday, the station said, on the northeastern side of Indy.

Police were originally dispatched to the next 3300 block on E. 36th Street at around 3:45 am, WTTV said, where a young man was found with a gunshot wound. Police said he was hospitalized and must survive.

After investigating the incident, police went to the Adams Street location around 4 am, where they discovered several people shot inside a house. Authorities confirmed that six people were shot to death, including a pregnant woman and her son. They believe the shot was a targeted attack.

An investigation into the shooting is underway. The Associated Press said Sunday night that no suspects were in custody.

“… what we saw this morning was a different kind of evil. What happened this morning, based on the evidence that has been gathered so far, was a mass murder,” Taylor said on Sunday. “More than that, we believe it was not random.”

Taylor mentioned that Sunday’s crime was the largest mass shooting in the city in more than a decade, according to the AP.

He also mentioned that he is “determined” to find answers to the deadly shooting and pleaded with the public to help provide any information by calling the IMPD Homicide Office at 317-327-3475 or Crime Stoppers of Central Indiana at 317-262- 8477.

At the end of Sunday, the Marion County coroner released the names of the victims, aged between 13 and 42, in addition to the fetus.
