Long Island saw more than 2,500 new cases of COVID-19 reported, according to data released by the New York State Department of Health on Saturday, January 23.
There were 1,309 new cases in Suffolk County and another 1,198 in Nassau, for a total of 2,507.
The rate of positive infection on Long Island in the past three days is as follows.
- Wednesday, January 20: 7.39 percent
- Thursday, January 21: 7.31 percent
- Friday, January 22: 7.10 percent
On Saturday, there were a total of 1,622 hospitalizations on Long Island, with approximately 28% of hospital beds still available in Nassau and Suffolk.
There are currently 691 patients with COVID-19 being treated in 852 ICUs in Long Island, with 20 percent of these beds still available.
There have been 33 COVID-related deaths recently reported on Long Island – 16 in Suffolk County and seven in Nassau County, and 157 across the state. 33,907 COVID deaths have already occurred across the state during the pandemic.

“The COVID-19 vaccine is here and we are distributing it as soon as possible, but supply limitations and the continued spread of the virus should cause concern for New Yorkers,” said Governor Andrew Cuomo on Saturday. “We have a network to distribute the vaccine, but not enough of the vaccines themselves.
“That’s why New Yorkers need to be vigilant as we continue to fight the pandemic and use the tools that have worked so well all the time – wearing masks, washing your hands and socializing.
“We remain focused on ensuring that there are sufficient hospital beds and on raising our tests to ever higher levels. We will overcome the pandemic and reach a new day, but in the meantime, New Yorkers will work together in their communities to take us to the light at the end of the tunnel. “
