Teyonah Parris, who joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe as the adult Monica Rambeau in WandaVision, says he doesn’t know “how or who” his character can become Captain Marvel 2. After her role as the lovable “Geraldine” in reality inspired by a sitcom apparently shaped by former Avenger Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen), Parris repeats her role as a modern SWORD Agent opposite Carol Danvers (Brie Larson) and Mrs. MarvelKamala Khan (Iman Vellani) at Captain Marvel sequel to Candyman director Nia DaCosta. Whether she becomes Photon, Pulsar or Spectrum – all identities adopted by Monica in the Marvel comics – Parris is “very honored and excited” to operate in the MCU space.
“Monica Rambeau has had a lot of nicknames over the decades and I think they were all really special in a very particular way. I don’t know how or who she will be at MCU,” said Parris Variety. “Because when I tell you, she changes her name and gives them all a beating. So, I don’t know who she will be in her superhero form. But I’m excited by the thought of many of them.”
Asked about the potential to become Marvel’s next black superhero, the Dear white people star says it is significant to see “Geraldine” as a recurring character who appears in decades of classic sitcoms in WandaVision.
“I think what I hear most often is from black women who are excited to see images of themselves on the screen. you and i am very excited. And that is really necessary, ‘”said Parris. “And I agree that it is necessary, not only in the space of the superhero, but that it is a bigger representation. Although he is a fantastic superhero [role], still allows this black woman to enter everyone’s home, not just across the country, but around the world. And I feel that it gives the public of all races, creeds, lifestyles, an opportunity to engage with their humanity with the humanity of black women. “
Parris added: “This is very important and I am very honored and excited to be able to be part of that process.”
DaCosta, who runs Parris in Candyman before Captain Marvel 2, is the first black filmmaker to direct a film for Marvel Studios. Earlier this month, Parris said CinemaBlend the “drug” DaCosta will bring “all its wonders” to the Captain Marvel sequence scheduled to open in theaters on November 11, 2022.
