“When the staff arrived, they found that the victim had reached the coast and was receiving first aid from the KOR team,” the fire department wrote in a Facebook post on Friday.
Honolulu Star Adviser reported on Friday that the man was taken to Maui Memorial Hospital in good condition.
According to the Hawaii Department of Lands and Natural Resources, there were no other divers or swimmers in the vicinity and the man called 911 on his own.
Officials from its Resource Conservation and Inspection Division and Aquatic Resource Divisions posted warning signs about sharks in the area after the meeting and patrolled the beach on foot and in off-road vehicles to alert people.
Bathers were advised to stay out of the water until a permission signal was issued.
According to Maui Now, ocean and weather conditions were calm at the time of the report, following extreme gusts that swept through the Hawaiian islands earlier last week.
