Episode 3 of WandaVision may have fallen just a few hours ago, but one of its key moments is already in the top 10 of Kevin Smith’s MCU scenes of all time.

WandaVision Episode 3, “Now In Color”, has one of Kevin Smith’s favorite scenes in Marvel history. Debuting at Disney + last week, WandaVision it is the first in a series of episodes of MCU content to hit the streaming service over the next few years, and the series celebrates the leap to television by parodying the history of American sitcoms. Reactions to the first two episodes, both from critics and fans, were positive, meaning that many people have upcoming Fridays marked on their calendars.
One of these people is undoubtedly Kevin Smith, a director whose debut film Clerks remains a landmark for independent cinema. In addition to being a longtime comic book fan who incorporates this fandom into his films (even operating within his own shared universe), Smith wrote stories for Marvel and DC and even owns his own comic book store. He is one of the best-known voices in the Marvel fandom, supposedly inspiring Chris Hemsworth to shake up Thor in Thor: Ragnarok, and it still exists inside the MCU from a Mallrats reference in Captain Marvel.

Kevin smith often shares their immediate reactions to MCU content on Twitter and the director seems very interested WandaVision episode 3, which fell on Disney + today. Careful to avoid spoilers, but clearly dying to discuss the episode, Smith alludes to a particular scene with a screenshot of Wanda / Scarlet Witch actress Elizabeth Olsen, who particularly impressed him. He already ranks the scene among his 10 favorites in Marvel Studios’ history and praises his work at all levels, highlighting Olsen’s performance as worthy of TV’s greatest tribute.
Spectators who saw the new WandaVision The episode will immediately know what moment Smith is referring to, and it is certainly emotional. After Wanda gave birth to two twin sons, Billy and Tommy, she sadly shares with Geraldine (played by Teyonah Parris) that she is also a twin and that her brother’s name was Pietro. This seems to awaken a memory in Geraldine, who asks if he was killed by Ultron, referring to the death of Pietro / Mercury in the culminating battle of Avengers: Age of Ultron in 2015. While Wanda interrogates Geraldine, who tries to return to his happy sitcom behavior, Olsen and Parris subtly display a range of emotions that communicate a struggle between the two characters, the exact nature of which remains a mystery. The scene ends with Geraldine being expelled from the city protected by Westview force camp, presumably by Wanda.
It is hard to imagine many fans disagreeing with Smith on this point, as the excellent scene suggests a deeper conflict in the hearts of WandaVisionThe sitcom makes parodies without revealing much concrete information about the series’ mystery. Olsen discussed how those moments of collision between the sitcom world and the larger MCU are most interesting to her as a performer, and she shows why in this episode. Whether scenes like this make her Emmy-worthy or not is a topic of debate, but she can expect at least one Marvel-loving filmmaker to campaign for her when the time comes.
