A Wisconsin judge modified the release conditions for Kyle Rittenhouse, the teenager accused of killing two men amid protests in Kenosha last year, after prosecutors claimed he drank beer and received a “serenade” with the Proud anthem. Boys at a bar on bail.
A lawyer at Rittenhouse did not object to the change in bail conditions after they were proposed in January. Rittenhouse, now 18, is free after paying $ 2 million bail.
Under the new terms, Rittenhouse is prohibited from drinking alcohol and prohibited from associating with any group or person known to threaten others based on issues such as race or religion. He cannot have any weapons.
The 18-year-old is accused of fatally shooting two people in Kenosha on August 25 during protests and protests over the police’s killing of Jacob Blake. His lawyers argued that he was acting in self-defense. His case was supported by some on the right.
Prosecutors tried to change his bail conditions after claiming that Rittenhouse was at a bar in Mount Pleasant with his mother on January 5.
While there, Rittenhouse drank three beers and listened to a five-man serenade with a song used as a hymn for the far-right group Proud Boys, prosecutors in the motion said. He was also seen in a video displaying the “OK” sign, which prosecutors said was co-opted by white supremacist groups.
Rittenhouse’s lawyer said in court documents that he is not and has never been a member of a white supremacist group. The lawyer said Rittenhouse did not object to the new terms of the bond.
While in other parts of the country a person must be 21 years old to drink alcohol legally, in Wisconsin younger people can drink if they are with a parent.
