CNBC contributor Ben White said President Joe Biden “very much wants to make a bipartisan deal” with regard to his government’s $ 1.9 trillion stimulus plan to lift the United States out of its economic crisis.
“He doesn’t want to blow up the obstruction in the Senate,” said White, who is also the Politico’s main economic correspondent. “He would like to come to an agreement on a big package, maybe not $ 2 trillion, but something close to that, that has unemployment insurance, that has $ 1,400 checks and the rest, that’s the main objective, so they try to do that. “
Biden promised to act quickly and fix the US economy during his second full day in office. He called his plan a “moral obligation” to provide financial relief to millions of Americans and signed two executive decrees on Friday. One focused on raising the federal minimum wage to $ 15 an hour, while the other expanded the benefits of federal food stamps.
“We can’t, we won’t let people go hungry,” proclaimed Biden. “We cannot allow people to be evicted for anything they have done themselves. They cannot see people losing their jobs. And we have to act. We have to act now.”
Friday’s executive orders are based on Biden’s $ 1.9 trillion stimulus plan. He said his proposal has bipartisan support from “the majority of American mayors and governors”. However, the Biden government must get Congress to approve the plan. Senator Lindsey Graham, RS.C., said the plan is dead on arrival, but noted that “there are components of it that I like.”
The White House says it is making disclosure this Sunday and there is a phone call scheduled with 16 senators to discuss the president’s aid plan. White told CNBC’s “The News with Shepard Smith” that if the negotiations fail, the Biden government has two options.
“Um, blow up the obstruction, go with 51 votes and drag it that way,” explained White in an interview late on Friday. “Biden does not want to do that, he is an institutionalist. The other, more difficult, is to try to write the checks and send money to the people and divide it into smaller pieces.”
