In recent weeks, several reports have suggested that the iPhone 12 mini is not selling as well as the rest of the iPhone 12 line. On the other hand, the iPhone 12 Pro is selling better than Apple expected. Naturally, this makes us wonder if the “mini” form factor will remain on this year’s iPhone 12S or iPhone 13.
But the important thing to keep in mind here is that Apple does not provide unit sales for any of its hardware products. As such, we will probably never know how many iPhone 12 mini units Apple sold compared to the rest of the iPhone 12 line. The only data we have comes from supply chain analysts and reports.
Earlier this week, Morgan Stanley analysts reported that Apple switched 2 million first-quarter production units from the iPhone 12 mini to the iPhone 12 Pro. This investment note corroborated reports that sales of the iPhone 12 line as a all were larger than expected, while those on the mini specifically were disappointing.
So far, there have been no specific reports on whether Apple will maintain the same line with this year’s iPhone 12S / iPhone 13 update. Macotakara vaguely hinted that the lineup will look the same, but the details are unclear.
But just because the iPhone 12 mini isn’t selling as well as the rest of the iPhone 12 line doesn’t mean that Apple will necessarily discontinue it. The people using the 5.4-inch device are big fans of it, it’s proven to be more niche than Apple initially expected.
Personally, I think the mini size of the iPhone 12 will live to see another year. While a niche, it gives Apple a way to keep the starting price of the iPhone 12 line at $ 699. We also don’t expect major design changes with the iPhone 12S this year, and Apple is unlikely to make format changes with design changes.
What do you think? Will Apple discontinue the iPhone 12 mini format this year when introducing the iPhone 2021 line? Let us know in the poll below and explain in the comments!
