Google refreshes Mobile Search on Android and iOS

As the company’s flagship product, major changes to Google Search take some time to develop and are widely tested. Google today announced a significant redesign of the look and feel of Search on mobile devices with a focus on simplicity.

It starts at the top of the screen, where the search field is now visually elevated from the company logo, profile avatar and other elements. This added depth replaces the way the bar previously used light gray outlines. The search filters that appear below are no longer in capital letters, while the current category on display is only marked by a narrow black underline instead of blue.

The Knowledge Panels are currently distinguished by a large header that includes the name, category and merry-go-round, while the background has a slightly light theme. The new design eliminates this separate upper section and makes it integrated with the information and image gallery – which now has rounded corners – shown below.

One aspect of this redesign sees the colors used “more intentionally to guide the eye to important information without overwhelming or distracting” For example, it emphasizes the subtopic carousel, which now displays each section on individual chips. A spectrum of hues – silenced in bold – was explored for this redesign, but Google opted for a solid foundation to maintain focus on content.

Further down the page, the web results now extend from left to right. While still hidden in cards, the effect is much less apparent with Google moving away from the shadows. In general, this helps to provide more space for content and results in a cleaner, less busy appearance.

Another change is the Google Sans font used in more places on a larger, heavier scale. Text in the company’s exclusive font is easier to read on white backgrounds and much larger in places, such as Knowledge Charts. This helps users to check the results quickly.

“We want to let the search results shine, allowing people to focus on the information instead of the design elements around them.”

The goal of this redesign on phones and other mobile devices is to make searching easier, making everything else go backwards. It is being implemented on the mobile web, as well as Google apps for Android and iOS, starting today and will be widely available in the coming days. Desktop Search already has a similar redesign, but only for certain types of queries, such as those related to COVID-19.
