‘The Simpsons’ seemed to get it right again on the grand opening

However, like the oldest comedy in the history of the United States, the timeless series is often aligned with moments of “life imitates art” that happen years after it airs.
This week, for example, social media users couldn’t help wondering about the latest coincidence between Vice President Kamala Harris’ outfit during the inauguration and Lisa Simpson’s outfit in a 2000 episode.
In “Bart for the future”, Lisa takes over the presidency and asks the now viral line: “As you know, we have inherited a major budget crisis from President Trump.”

In the episode, Lisa wore a purple jacket and pearls. At Wednesday’s opening, Harris wore a purple jacket and pearls. With Harris serving immediately after Donald Trump’s presidency, viewer comparisons were promptly made.

The similarities to the opening do not end there for Simpsons fans. Actor Tom Hanks appeared as a presenter during a virtual concert on Wednesday night, which aimed to maintain President Joe Biden’s theme of national unity in times of crisis.
In “The Simpsons Movie” 2007, Hanks in a cameo features a new Grand Canyon proposed in Springfield, the Simpsons’ hometown.
'The Simpsons' remain our mediums

“Hi. I’m Tom Hanks. The United States government has lost its credibility, so it’s borrowing a little bit from mine,” he says.

At the end of the scene, he says, “If you’re going to choose a government to trust, why not this one?”

Speculation about the program’s prescient skills is nothing new. Fans say the program predicted, among other things, the attack of the Siegfried and Roy tiger, smart watches, “killer wasps” and the purchase of 20 Century Fox by Disney.

The program’s longevity and its depletion of possible sitcom scenarios were even mentioned in other comedies, including the episode “South Park”, “The Simpsons Already Did It”.

When asked in 2016 about the prediction of a Donald Trump presidency so far in advance, writer Dan Greaney told The Hollywood Reporter, “It was a warning to America.”

“And it felt like the last logical stop before it hit rock bottom. It was launched because it was consistent with the vision of America going crazy,” he added.
