Pueblo Public Health mistakenly administered someone an empty syringe instead of a COVID-19 vaccine

PUEBLO, Colorado (KKTV) – The Pueblo Department of Public Health and Environment is confessing a mistake after a nurse accidentally administered an empty syringe to a Colorado resident.

On Thursday, Pueblo administered more than 3,500 vaccines to people aged 70 and over, but one of the people lucky enough to receive an injection in the arm had to receive a second injection shortly thereafter because of the error.

The following statement by the Director of Public Health of Pueblo, Randy Evetts, was sent on Thursday afternoon:

“Safety is the biggest concern for Pueblo [Department] Public Health and Environment. We confirm that a contracted nurse administered an empty syringe to an old man from Colorado, mistakenly thinking it was filled with a vaccine. The syringe was new and there was no risk of being used, as used syringes are discarded immediately, according to normal safety protocol. The error was discovered through normal PDPHE security processes. As soon as the error was discovered, we consulted our chief physician and determined that the person was fine. The individual then received the vaccination. Although the error has been isolated in this case, we have instituted additional security measures to ensure that it does not happen again – limiting the number of people filling syringes and having fewer additional people in the room. We are reviewing the safety protocols with all the hired nurses again and provide safety instructions every day before vaccination clinics start.
