For the past two months, we’ve offered weekly Detroit Lions candidate profiles for general manager and head coach positions on our podcast. We talked about Marvin Lewis to Rick Smith for Brian Daboll But now that Lions have finally made their choices in both positions, we no longer need to talk about the candidates. We can talk about the real guys.
Lions head coach Dan Campbell will speak to the media for the first time at 11am ET on Thursday, but we wanted to get to know him better in advance. So we spoke to Hal Habib of the Palm Beach Post, who has been on the Dolphins program for decades.
He was there when Dan Campbell took over as interim coach in 2015 and even wrote a few articles about why he believed Campbell should have gotten full-time employment in 2016. On Wednesday, he also wrote a column calling Campbell “the the one who ran away. ”
So we asked him why he believes Campbell can be a great head coach, how he turned the Dolphins almost immediately into a competitive team and how he weaves the line between being intense, but also knowing when to get off the gas.
This is the first part of our podcast series, as we follow Campbell’s coaching career and what led him to where he is today.
