Washington to hire Martin Mayhew

One of the candidates Washington considered for the position of general manager will return to the nation’s capital anyway, despite Marty Hurney set to lead the team’s front office.

Martin Mayhew agreed to the terms for joining the Washington office, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL.com (on twitter) The role of the ex-Lions GM has yet to be determined, but considering that he was a senior executive with the 49ers in recent years, Mayhew will soon occupy a key position within Hurney- and Ron Riveracontrolled power structure.

In addition to bringing almost eight years of experience in GM, Mayhew will return to the team with which he won the Super Bowl. During an eight-year playing career, Mayhew was the starting cornerback for Washington’s dominant team in 1991 – during a four-year stay in DC – but his executive work took place mainly in Detroit and San Francisco.

Taking over a tattered franchise in 2008, Mayhew elevated Lions back into the playoffs. Detroit returned to the postseason in Mayhew’s third full season, 2011, and returned to the playoffs in 2014 under Jim Caldwell. While Lions sacked Mayhew in 2015, the on-call nucleus he created reached the playoffs in 2016 as well. Mayhew, 55, joined the 49ers in 2017 and has served as vice president of staff for players in the organization for the past two years.
