49ers will not lose the vice president of players’ staff, Adam Peters, but will losing vice president of players’ team Martin Mayhew to Washington Football Team according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Media.
Mayhew’s role in Washington is unknown, but he will not take over as general manager, as the team will hire Marty Hurney for that position.
Since Hurney will assume the title of general manager, Mayhew’s departure means that the 49ers will not be rewarded with a compensatory choice in the third round. The expanded Rooney rule requires minority candidates to be hired for technician and general manager positions to receive these additional draft choices.
Athletic’s Matt Barrows wrote that San Francisco does not expect any compensation.
Mayhew joined the 49ers front office in 2017 as a senior personnel executive. He received a promotion to VP of player personnel before the 2019 season. Before coming to San Francisco, Mayhew served on the New York Giants board for a year. Prior to that, he worked at Detroit Lions for 15 seasons, including seven as general manager.
