Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes has taken a step in the right direction.
On Wednesday, Mahomes practiced in a limited capacity despite being in the NFL’s concussion protocol, meaning there is a high chance that the current Super Bowl MVP will face Buffalo Bills in the AFC Championship Game on Sunday.
Coach Andy Reid was pleased with Mahomes’ progress.

“He looked fine,” said Reid. “He’s in the protocol, so there are only certain things he can do, but he took all the pictures and he feels good. So, I mean, let’s follow this protocol as closely as possible.”
Mahomes, who was injured in the third quarter of the 22-17 victory last Sunday over the Cleveland Browns in the AFC playoff division round, suffered the injury when he was tackled in the head and neck area while carrying the ball in an option QB Touch. After the game, reports said he messed with a nerve that runs up his neck.

In order for Mahomes to play, he must complete five steps in the league return to game protocol. These steps include resting until the signs and symptoms return to baseline clearance to initiate cardio; stretching and balance training with medical supervision; an increase in exercise that includes monitored strength training; the resumption of non-contact football activities; and then the player is released by the team’s doctors and undergoes an independent neurological examination, at which point he is released to practice and play.

It is not known what stage Mahomes was on Wednesday, but based on what Reid said, the All-Pro quarterback may be in the fourth stage of the process. If Mahomes continues in the right direction, there is a good chance that he will participate in training on Thursday or Friday.
“He did well up to this point and they just make him progress throughout the day,” said Reid, “so today he had limited work and no contact, I think that was today’s schedule. And that is what we will do on Wednesday , so it fits perfectly with that. “
