How Donald Trump could destroy the GOP in one easy step

“We will be back somehow. Have a good life.”

Which has undoubtedly struck fear in the hearts of every Republican politician (see: “McConnell, Mitch”) who has spent the past few days and weeks trying to make sure that Trump never, ever comes back.

When trying to decipher what Trump means – you’re coming back, but should we also have a good life? – it is not a simple task, there was a hint of what he could have said on the Tuesday night news.

If Trump is serious about creating a party that rivals the Republican Party (and Democrats), it would be a total disaster for Republicans.

As Andrew Restuccia of the WSJ noted:

“The president has a large base of supporters, some of whom were not deeply involved in Republican politics prior to Mr. Trump’s 2016 campaign.”

Yes, yes, he does. And if Trump urges all of these supporters to flock to a more Trumpian party than he believes the Republican Party is positioned to be, it immediately divides the Republican Party’s traditional vote into two factions. And none of these factions are big enough to be a majority in a general election.

A Trump-backed division of the Republican base – or worse, an open war between the Trump party and the Republican Party – could hurt conservatives’ chances of retaking power in Washington not for months, but for years.

The point: Does Trump know the destruction he can cause at the party he has led for the past four years? Does he care?
