New York Times leftist columnist Paul Krugman was widely mocked on Wednesday after confusing the performance of the patriotic song “America” with the British national anthem, which has the same melody.
“Band playing God Save the King? It’s not exactly appropriate,” tweeted Krugman, as a band played the song also known as “My Country Tis of Thee” just before President Biden’s inauguration ceremony began.
He quickly concluded that he had forgotten that there were “Americanized letters”. The liberal economist assumed that he had “spent a lot of time there over the years”, referring to the United Kingdom.

Critics on Twitter were surprised that Krugman did not recognize the famous song on the day of the inauguration and were amused to boast about his trips to Europe.
“I thought he was kidding,” tweeted Becket Adams of the Washington Examiner, “while journalist Yashar Ali wrote,” Absolutely incredible. “
The song was performed at both inauguration ceremonies of former President Barack Obama in 2009 and 2013.

Biden was inaugurated on Wednesday as the 46th president, replacing former president Donald Trump. Krugman expressed emotion during his ceremony, saying the festivities made him cry.
“America can do it,” he wrote.
Krugman predicted that a global recession would follow quickly after Trump’s election.
