Kansas City Chiefs Patrick Mahomes fully practices, remains on concussion protocol

KANSAS CITY, Missouri – Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes fully trained on Wednesday, taking another step to possibly resolve the concussion protocol in time for Sunday’s AFC Championship Game against Buffalo Bills.

“He has done well up to this point,” said coach Andy Reid of Mahomes, who remains in the NFL’s concussion protocol after being eliminated in the divisional round win over the Cleveland Browns last week. ” [Mahomes was allowed to do] limited work and no contact. This is more or less what we will do on Wednesday, so it fit well. “

Mahomes was listed as a full participant when the Chiefs released their practice report on Wednesday.

Reid did not say at what stage of the five-step process Mahomes is about to be released to play.

Mahomes was replaced in the third quarter of last Sunday’s 22-17 victory over Browns by veteran Chad Henne, who would start against Bills if Mahomes was unable to play.

Pro Bowl Bills cornerback Tre’Davious White said on Wednesday that Buffalo hopes to face Mahomes on Sunday.

“This is the AFC Championship, this is the game to go to the Super Bowl; we know that all of his best players will be there. We are preparing for the presence of Mahomes, which we know he will do,” said White. .

Chiefs’ wide receiver Sammy Watkins (calf), running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire (hip and ankle) and cornerback Bashaud Breeland (shoulder / concussion) were listed as limited training participants on Wednesday. Watkins and Edwards-Helaire were inactive for the Chiefs’ victory over Cleveland. Breeland, like Mahomes, is under concussion protocol.

ESPN’s Mike Reiss and The Associated Press contributed to this report.
