Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network reported that San Francisco 49ers team vice president Martin Mayhew is going to Washington as a senior executive with a position to be determined.
Mayhew’s title will determine whether or not 49ers will receive a free choice. Here’s how the NFL drafted the Rooney rule adjustments:

Primary is the keyword here. If Mayhew is named a “chief football executive”, San Francisco will receive a compensatory choice in the third round. Once Washington finds out Mayhew’s title, we’ll have a better idea of whether or not the team will be given an extra choice in the third round. Do the right thing, Washington, and appoint a chief executive!
Washington hired Marty Hurney as general manager on Tuesday, so that position is not available to Mayhew. There is a bit of a gray area with the way the NFL drafted how it is rewarding choices, so instead of taking on one or the other, all we can do is wait and see. I believe that the Niners will not be given a choice, as Mayhew was not named GM of Washington.
Anyway, congratulations to Mayhew, and I imagine that if he is leaving the vice president of personnel for players in San Francisco, he will have a higher position on the Washington frontline.
