AUGUSTA, Georgia (WRDW / WAGT) – Augusta University Health has been approved to establish a vaccination site in Aiken County
The South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control gave the hospital’s approval on Wednesday morning.
Hospital administrators are working to finalize where the clinic will be installed.
They hope to be able to start vaccinating in Aiken County at the end of next week or early next week, depending on the vaccine supply.
The change comes as South Carolina faces vaccination problems. And while not taking enough doses is part of the problem, legislators in Palmetto state have created a vaccine review committee which will meet later this week. Local deputy Bill Hixon said state health officials were not prepared, but the state plans to do better.
AND South Carolina Senator Lindsey Graham is also getting involved in the effort to bring more vaccines to the state. Graham tweeted on Tuesday that there was a “very good briefing” with Governor Henry McMaster, where the South Carolina Hospital Association, the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control and others provided information on the distribution of the vaccine in the state.
All of this comes as South Carolina sees the biggest shortage of COVID-19 since the pandemic began.
Georgia also has problems, although statistics are improving. Although Georgia is still behind the top performers, more than doubled the number of COVID-19 vaccinations reported in one week. More than 423,000 people received the vaccine as of Monday.
