A multimillion-dollar lawsuit was filed against UFC superstar Conor McGregor by a woman in his country, Ireland.
The woman is represented by attorney Dave Coleman of Coleman Legal Partners, who confirmed the news to MMA Fighting in a phone call on Tuesday after news of the lawsuit was first reported by the Independent in Ireland. The personal injury lawsuit was opened on Monday over events that allegedly occurred in 2018. The woman’s mother has also filed a minor lawsuit against McGregor, and she is also being represented by Coleman in the case.
The identity of the woman and her mother and details of the allegations in the lawsuit are not made public due to Ireland’s strict privacy laws.
“We cannot comment on the substantive issues,” Coleman told MMA Fighting. “Suffice it to say that I represent these ladies, we have issued these cases before the court and we are satisfied that our case is well founded before the court.”
McGregor, who is in Abu Dhabi preparing for the fight against Dustin Poirier on Saturday at UFC 257, had a statement from his representatives after news of the lawsuit.
“After an exhaustive investigation conducted by Gardaí which, in addition to interviews with the author, included interviews with various sources, obtaining testimony from witnesses, examining footage on a closed circuit and the cooperation of Conor McGregor, these claims were categorically rejected,” McGregor spokesman Karen Kessler said in a statement initially published in the Independent.
“The author knows that the facts contradict the claims of this action. Mr McGregor will contest any complaints and is confident that justice will prevail ”.
According to the Independent, the situation raised by the lawsuit involved an investigation originally conducted by An Garda Síochána, but no charges were ever made against McGregor.
The woman involved in the lawsuit has known McGregor “for many years”. In March 2019, the New York Times reported that McGregor was under investigation for sexual assault in Ireland for an alleged incident that occurred in 2018. Two months earlier, McGregor was detained and questioned by law enforcement authorities regarding the incident, but released while awaiting an investigation. in-depth.
Due to strict Irish laws, the details of the alleged incident were never released. According to the Times, the accuser said the alleged incident occurred at the Beacon Hotel in Dublin, which is close to McGregor’s hometown, Crumlin, in southern Dublin. In the report, McGregor was described as an “occasional guest” at the hotel, and sources said they had seen him visiting before the night of the incident.
In addition to this investigation, McGregor has also resolved several other legal issues in recent years. Last September, he was interviewed and released by police in Corsica after allegations of “attempted sexual assault and sexual exhibition”. In 2019, he pleaded guilty to assault and was fined after punching a bar client in Ireland. In 2018, he reached a court settlement with prosecutors in Brooklyn after he launched an attack on a busload of fighters before UFC 223 in April 2018.
