We gave the Pixel 4a 5G a score of 86 and it really has a lot in common with the more expensive Pixel 5. Subtle differences in smartphone finish and camera settings indicate which is which, and the biggest noticeable difference between the two is the larger Pixel 4a 5G OLED screen, 6.2 inches, 1080 x 2340. Both have fingerprint sensors on the back and work with Snapdragon 765G processor, although the 4th 5G has 6 GB of RAM, while the Pixel 5 has 8 GB. The Pixel 4a 5G also has a headphone jack, which will be useful for those who have not yet transitioned to wireless headsets.
The Pixel 4a 5G impressed us with its smooth performance and remarkably long battery life (up to 17.5 hours in our tests). The second ultra-wide lens just added to the rear camera set offers a more versatile telephoto option than you’ll find on previous Pixel smartphones. You’ll get all the latest camera software from Google on this device too, which includes features like Night Vision mode for low light photos, portrait light and new stabilization modes for video recording.
The main features of the Pixel 5 that the Pixel 4a 5G does not have are wireless charging, IP68 resistance to water and dust and support for sub-6Ghz and mmwave 5G systems. All of these features are useful for any smartphone, but cost an additional $ 240 now. Most people will probably do well with the Pixel 4a 5G feature set, making this a good deal if you want to save money on an updated Android phone.
