New York Jets’ new coach Robert Saleh hired two offensive assistants for the San Francisco 49ers. Former defensive coordinator selected Niners pass game coordinator Mike LaFleur to be his offensive coordinator and offensive line coach John Benton to serve in the same position with the additional title of running game coordinator according to a report by Mike Silver of NFL Media.
The 49ers will promote Chris Foerster, currently the team’s game planning assistant, to become the offensive line coach and rehired Rich Scangarello as quarterback coach. What comes from defender coach Shane Day is unknown.
Foerster last year was an assistant coach for the offensive line and will return to the role he held at the 49ers under Jim Tomsula in 2015. He took over in Miami as coach of the offensive line in the 2016 and 2017 seasons.
Scangarello was the first quarterback for coach Kyle Shanahan in the 49ers, before becoming the Broncos’ offensive coordinator in 2018. He was fired after one season and joined the Eagles as an offensive assistant. His return seemed imminent after he left Philadelphia and an exodus from the 49ers’ offensive coaches seemed likely.
