WINDSOR, SC (WRDW / WAGT) – To get the vaccine in several places, you can only make an appointment online.
For many elderly people, this is a problem, whether they are computer literate or do not have access to the Internet.
Here in Windsor, South Carolina, residents are trying to get the COVID-19 vaccine.
“It is really unbelievable what happens and how people are suffering and not getting help for it,” said Judie Johnson.
Johnson and her husband live on a small piece of land outside Aiken, where access to the internet is limited.
“Even if we had a computer here, there are no lines available. AT&T is packed and broadband doesn’t get that far. So far, no one can enter and it is just a difficult, difficult situation and we need help and we desperately need it, ”she said.
Like the Johnson family, this means that anyone living in these rural areas cannot connect to the Internet to register for a COVID-19 vaccine. Their only option is to call, but they called five places on the DHEC vaccine locator list.
This was a clinic response: “She said, ‘Good luck. How many people do you think will be in front of you? ‘And that is true. If everyone calls there who needs to call, that line will be closed at 12pm. Everyone won’t be accepted, so you have to wait another week and get in, ”said Johnson.
But from this week, DHEC will begin distributing the vaccine in rural areas. They say to make an appointment, if you don’t have access to the internet, use the CARE line.
But Johnson says he has done this several times and even went to the DHEC building in Aiken, and was unlucky.
“What do you do? Where are you going? I mean, it’s like a set of people who, if you don’t have a computer and can’t go online, will be forgotten,” said Johnson.
Johnson says that until she and her husband get the vaccine, the only hope is to keep calling.
“It really makes you thank God for each day and I hope you will be here tomorrow. If it happens, you will be able to get it, but there are a lot of people like us out there, ”said Johnson.
