Chatwood agrees to contract with Blue Jays originally appeared on NBC Sports Chicago
About an hour after the news that Jon Lester was going to the Nationals, another pitcher of the Cubs’ rotation in 2020 agreed to a new contract.
Tyler Chatwood is signing with the Blue Jays, pending a physical exam Jon Heyman of MLB Network reported for the first time. According to Sportsnet’s Shi Davidi, the two sides agreed to a $ 3 million one-year deal, but with incentives, Chatwood could earn up to $ 5.5 million.
The right-hander started the 2020 season allowing only one race on the first two combined outings. But soon the injury and inconsistency plagued the initial pitcher. He became a free agent after the season.
Chatwood’s three seasons with the Cubs were a roller coaster ride. In 2018, he led the National League in hiking. The following year, he seemed to find his balance as an appeaser.
He won a place at the end of the Spring Training rotation last season. A combination of José Quintana’s thumb injury, Lester’s slow progression to form and Chatwood’s effective approach to the break before summer camp pushed him to third place in the rotation in the opening week.
Due to an injury, Chatwood made only five starts in 2020, recording an ERA of 5.30, which corresponded to his 2018 ERA.
