Last week, both ESPN and Orange County Register reported that Bills’ offensive coordinator Brian Daboll has emerged as the favorite to become the next Chargers coach. That was not, we now know, the case.
The Chargers hired former Rams defensive coordinator Brandon Staley. From a source with knowledge of the situation, Staley was always the guy.
The source added that the report on Daboll was a surprise, not because Daboll was not one of the main candidates, but because the work would always be Staley’s if / when the parties could reach an agreement at the appropriate time.
The fact that Daboll and GM Tom Telesco attended the same high school seemed to feed the narrative. And Daboll was really in the mix. But Staley was, and is now, the guy.
The fact that the Rams lost this weekend and the Bills won had nothing to do with the decision. If the Rams had defeated the Packers and if the Bills had lost to the Ravens, the Chargers would have waited.
