The Chargers hired Rams defensive coordinator Brandon Staley as their next manager, announced Los Angeles on Sunday night.
Staley, who has been training for the past 14 years, held positions at the Bears and Broncos before architecting the NFL’s No. 1 defense in 2020. This will be his first position as head coach.
Staley, 38, had been with Rams for a year and only trained in the NFL for the past three years after joining Bears in 2017 from John Carroll University.
The defensive coach won one of the most coveted coaching positions in this off-season. Although the Chargers ended 2020 with a 7-9 record, there is a lot to look forward to with newcomer quarterback Justin Herbert.
Herbert, the supposed offensive rookie of the year, pitched for 4,336 yards and 31 touchdowns in his first year in the NFL and will have a bright future ahead in one of the country’s biggest markets.
Staley will have his hard work defensively for him, however. The Chargers had NFL defense number 23 and with no names like Aaron Donald or Jalen Ramsey in their ranks, the coach for the first time will have a lot to prove.
