There is no doubt that NBA Jam is one of the most popular sports games of all time. The classic arcade game that made waves in the 90s has continued to be relevant over the years, thanks to its killer gameplay, iconic lists and incredible catch phrases. And now, a new movie about the game is set to take place in the future.
Reported by Variety, a new documentary about NBA Jam is now under construction. The film will be based on the book by Reyen Ali which is about the game. BestCrosses Studios will be hired to produce the film, while Sean Menard, who has produced sports documentaries in the past, will be the director.
As for what the documentary is going to address, it should focus on creating the game and gaining popularity. The book that the film is based on interviews contained with a variety of people who helped to work on the original game. It also featured thoughts from NBA players, longtime fans and several others who love the game. It is logical that the documentary will make many of these people come back to speak on camera this time.
When it comes to what the film director has in mind for the project, he wants to focus not only on how NBA Jam it became a huge success, but also as the game developer would be shut down later. “Our film is more than just an original story about the most successful sports game of all time,” explained Menard to Variety. “There are a number of subplots that detail how games were moving from arcades to home entertainment and how that would lead to the end of Midway.”
For now, this NBA Jam film has no release date that was announced. Given that production is apparently starting now, it should be a year or two before we see it formally arrive. Still, it will be an interesting project to keep an eye on the future.
