The end of the road may be near for Drew Brees.

Before the New Orleans Saints ‘divisional round confrontation with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Fox Sports’ Jay Glazer reported on Sunday that the future Hall of Fame quarterback is planning to retire after the team’s playoff round has ended:

Brees turned 42 on Friday, so his retirement won’t be a surprise when it happens. That the 13-time Pro Bowler has already been decided is somewhat unexpected, however.

The Saints have their starting quarterback signed throughout the 2021 season, and he should count for almost $ 36.2 million against the salary cap, due in part to a $ 25 million salary and $ 5.8 million signing bonus.

Brees’ performance has dropped slightly this season compared to previous years. He shot for 2,942 yards, 24 touchdowns and six interceptions. His 245.2 yard pass per game was the lowest of his tenure at Saints, which dates back to 2006.

The fractured ribs and the collapsed lung he suffered may be influencing your decision as well.

Brees now has the opportunity to ride at sunset like John Elway and Peyton Manning, who won a Super Bowl before being eliminated. He would also give the Saints some time to formulate a succession plan.

Taysom Hill took most of the photos when Brees was injured and, unlike Jameis Winston, he already under contract to the next year. Hill’s production (88 of 121, 928 yards, four touchdowns, two interceptions) still raises doubts about its suitability in the starting position.

If the Saints fall short of a Super Bowl title, perhaps Brees can be convinced to try again. But fans had better enjoy the legendary flag while they can.
