Patents filed by Take-Two Interactive, the parent company of Rockstar Games, suggest that GTA 6 will be better than GTA Online in at least one important way.
New patents filed by Take-Two Interactive suggest that GTA VI will have a huge advantage over GTA Online in at least one aspect, although just how the resources will be implemented in a theoretical future Grand Theft Auto game is yet to be seen. Take-Two Interactive is the parent company of Rockstar Games, the developer behind the Grand Theft Auto Series. Although rumors of GTA 6 persisted for several years, Rockstar Games remained publicly committed to both GTA Online, the hugely popular online multiplayer component of GTA 5, and Red Dead Online too.
With current generation versions of GTA 5 already confirmed and a renewed focus on online multiplayer components of existing games, thanks to Red Dead Online becoming a standalone game, it appears that Rockstar has no immediate plans for a new installment in the Grand Theft Auto Series. This stance has persisted for some time and has frustrated fans who want more frequent releases from the popular franchise, but with the continued financial success of both. GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2 remaining profitable, it is understandable that Rockstar did not feel the need to strive to launch a new game.

Recent Take-Two Interactive patent applications suggest that GTA VI is becoming more of a focus – or at least, potential technologies that could inform the development of this game. As highlighted by the Twitter user Big Jim Colosimo (and reported by Intel Rockstar), some new patents related to session management systems and virtual environments have been registered by Take-Two Interactive. Essentially, session management is an online function that determines how effectively a game can fill its multiplayer resource. Essentially, the new patent is an advanced method that can allow online sessions to seamlessly transition between friends or prevent service interruptions by disconnecting.
The patent for virtual environments, on the other hand, suggests improvements in AI behaviors and how consoles handle their processing. The patent refers to the use of dedicated servers to assist in the more advanced AI design, rather than the hardware running the game, which again suggests some important plans for GTA VI online features.
Of course, it is important to take advantage of this potential GTA VI online patents with a grain of salt. Nothing about these patents is confirmed to be related to that game – which has not yet been announced yet – and they may not be implemented in it. Even if they are part of GTA VI plans, they can be integrated into the experience in ways that are not as obvious as those being discussed by analysts now. With all that said, however, it looks like Rockstar Games is once again pushing the boundaries in online game design and AI systems, and it will be exciting to see how it plays out whenever it becomes part of the company’s next release.
