Led by three senior wins Courtney Harnish on the day of last year, Georgia swept South Carolina in two competitions on Saturday. Women # 3 won a 184-116 win over Gamecocks, while men # 2 had a 179.5-103.5 win.
Harnish was one of 17 members of the Georgia men’s and women’s teams who last swam at the Gabrielsen Natatorium. Five would win events against South Carolina.
Harnish took the lead. She won the 100 freestyle in 49.45 seconds, the 100 backstroke (54.33) and 100 butterflies (53.33) in an exciting demonstration of versatility.
Elderly companions Olivia Anderson (1,000 freestyle) and Sammie Burchill (400 individual medley) also won.
Maxime Parker won the 50 and 200 free fights for Georgia and swam a leg in the free relay of the 400 victors. Tally Brown won both diving events. Zoie Hartman won 100 breaststroke and did free relay.
South Carolina recovered in the middle of the competition, Mari Kraus leading a 1-2 submission with Erynn Black 200 back and Taylor Steele winning chest 200 and finishing second on chest 100 (at 1: 01.03, the fifth fastest in South Carolina history).
The Gamecocks started the fight by winning the medley relay at 1: 40.27, the quartet of Bella Pantano, Steele, Janie Smith and Emma Walker posting the fourth fastest time in the program’s history.
From the male, senior side Jack Dalmolin came out on top in both breast tests. Senior diver Zach Allen also swept its two events, and Greg Reed won the 1,000 free to represent the older statesmen.
Jake Magahey obtained three victories, placing first in the 50, 200 and 500 free ones (yielding the 100 to Zach Hils win). Andrew Abruzzo won the 200 fly and 400 IM.
Magahey’s 50th win was a draw, 20.53 seconds, with that of South Carolina AJ Ross, the only victory of Gamecocks day.
