Gehrig Dieter’s tour of the Kansas City Chiefs’ lineup options continued on Saturday, making Alabama’s former wide receiver eligible to play an AFC postseason game on Sunday.
On Monday, the Chiefs dismissed Dieter from his active roster. On Wednesday, Kansas City hired Dieter for their training team. On Saturday, the Heads announced that Dieter was one of two players in the high training squad for Sunday’s weekend division game against the Cleveland Browns.
To increase squad flexibility during the coronavirus pandemic, the NFL allowed its teams to make two players on the training team eligible for each game.
While spending the first 16 weeks of the regular season on the training team, Dieter played two games that way. He also joined the game as a replacement for COVID-19, another squad enhancement for the 2020 campaign.
As the rules stipulated that a player on the training team could only be elevated twice during the regular season, the Chiefs hired Dieter for the active squad to play at the end of the regular season.
There is no ban on elevations in the playoffs, so if Kansas City wants to, Dieter may be eligible to play outside the training team, as long as the Chiefs remain alive.
In his four games in the regular season, Dieter managed a 10-yard pass and was on the field for 25 offensive shots and 61 plays on special teams.
After receiving a goodbye in the first round, the Chiefs are scheduled to open the AFC playoffs against the Browns at 2:05 pm CST on Sunday at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, Mo. CBS will broadcast the game.
