Offensive sign at downtown Omaha store creates social media storm

OMAHA, Nebraska (WOWT) – A picture is worth a thousand words and is posted on Gulliver’s World Goods Facebook page is generating controversy.

“I couldn’t believe that someone in our community would publicly put up a sign saying ‘don’t feed the wildlife, don’t feed the homeless’. They are our brothers and sisters, ”said Lisa Clark, who saw the post.

The signal is nowhere. It disappeared as quickly as it came. But the image is being shared continuously online.

“It was very upsetting to me because I was a single mother for over 16 years, said Lisa. I’ve been very close to becoming homeless so many times. “

Gulliver’s World Asset Manager, Matt, says he was even homeless for a while and says he has no idea who would have placed the sign outside the store.

“This is not me, this is not the property here,” said Matt. We are compassionate people. As I said, we housed, dressed, fed, I used one here when we entered the place. Doing odd jobs, painting, things like that. Clearly, this is not how we feel about their situation. “

But in a post on Gulliver’s Facebook page, the store says it was an “extremely bad judgment choice that an employee made” and that the employee was fired.

However, one of Gulliver’s co-owners, Chaz Kline, contradicts this. In a phone call, Kline said that no one was fired, they are investigating and taking full responsibility for what was placed on his property. Clark expects people to use this as a time to reflect and help those in need.

“Nothing about homelessness is funny,” said Lisa. And I really want to appeal to everyone during this pandemic and just during this period in our society. We need to be kind to each other. “

According to other social media posts, the company next door also had the same sign placed on its window. Several calls and a message to management were not returned.

Here is a new sign that was placed at Gulliver’s house.
