Justin Thomas lost Ralph Lauren’s sponsorship after being caught using anti-gay language during the PGA Tour Champions Tournament in Kapalua, Hawaii, last weekend.
Sports broadcasters captured the moment when the 27-year-old said “f-t” to himself after losing a shot in the third round during the tournament on 9 January.
Thomas apologized that same day, saying that his foul language “was not an excuse”.
Ralph Lauren said on Friday that he was “discouraged” with Thomas’s language and was cutting ties with the PGA golfer.
“We are discouraged by Mr. Thomas’ recent language, which is totally inconsistent with our values,” the fashion company said in a statement.
“As we make the decision, our hope is that Mr. Thomas will do the hard and necessary work to be our partner again – truly examining this incident, learning, growing and ultimately using his platform to promote inclusion,” continued company.
Thomas has been with Ralph Lauren since 2013 and reportedly was under contract until 2021, ESPN reported.
