Ethan Hawke will play the villain in front of Oscar Isaac in Marvel’s ‘Moon Knight’ (exclusive)

Hawke will play the main villain of the series.

Isaac is leading the show with one of Marvel’s cult characters who aims to start production in March in Budapest.

May Calamawy, who is perhaps best known for her work at Hulu’s Ramy, is already in the call list.

Moon Knight has had several incarnations over the decades since his debut in 1975, from being a former Marine who became a mercenary with various alter egos to being a channel for the Egyptian moon god Khonshu, and more recently a well-dressed consultant. One aspect of stories in the era of modern comics has been dealing with the mental illness of multiple personalities.

It is not clear who would play Hawke. The archinemesis of Moon Knight is considered a villain named Bushman, a fellow mercenary who turned against the hero when Egyptian gold came on the scene.

Mohamed Diab, the Egyptian pilot behind the Middle East drama Shock, and Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead, an independent film production team behind sci-fi horror films The infinite and Synchronic, are directing the show.

Hawke’s career began in the mid-1980s with science fiction films for teenagers Explorers but for more than 35 years, he has shied away from the comic book genre. He did, however, star in genre works, helping to launch successful horror franchises Sinister and Clearance.

His extensive work saw him twice nominated for an actor Oscar – in 2002 Training Day and 2015 Childhood – and twice to write – for 2005 Before sunrise and 2014 Before midnight.

He recently wrapped The Nordic, a Viking revenge saga by Roberg Eggers starring Anya-Taylor-Joy and coming out of strong warnings to The good lord bird, a historical drama that he created and starred in.

Hawke is represented by CAA and MGMT.
