The first video game in the series was developed by Midway Games and released in 1992. The storyline shows a diverse range of fighters from eighteen different kingdoms who face off in an epic tournament. Some sequences followed the original game with the most recent one, Mortal Kombat 11, being released earlier this year.

Two Mortal combat films have been made previously. The first, simply entitled Mortal combat, was directed by Paul WS Anderson and released in 1995. Two years later, a sequel came, Annihilation, which also paved the way for two television series: the animated Kingdom Defenders and the live action Konquest. Two web series were launched based on ownership also by director Kevin Tancharoen.

Mortal combat is scheduled to hit theaters and HBO Max simultaneously on April 16!
