Internet CultureInternet CultureIt’s hard to keep up with the culture of the internet, but don’t worry: every week, we’ll tell you the best you need to know.

From this week silly potpourri that you may not know takes us from whaling ships in 1800 to the hottest houses in 2021, with a pitstop in Lental to catch some Pokémon.

TikTok trend of the week: sea shacks

Future sociologists and cultural historians will write dissertations debating why, exactly, the songs originally sung by sailors in the 1800s are the hottest trend at TikTok this week in particular. But here we are: the sea shacks are the bangers of the moment.

The hype machine for maritime songs seems to have started with a video of Scottish postman Nathan Evans singing “The Wellerman, ”And exploded from there. Others started recording your own songs, adding their voices to Evans’ video, creating parodies, trying to figure it out, and otherwise honoring / cutting and spoiling this almost forgotten musical form. But it really took off with this hilarious video from Beertheist which demonstrates in 44 seconds how the shacks of the sea are initially ridiculous, then delicious and, ultimately, irresistible.

This week in games: Pokémon Snap release date announced

Nintendo is loved for taking its worn-out intellectual property from console to console, creating enhanced versions of older titles and then releasing almost the same game on newer machines. (I’m not complaining – tthat’s all I want Nintendo to do, always). Player favorite Pokémon Snap, although, hasn’t been seen on a Nintendo console since the Nintendo 64 in 1999. Snap I missed the GameCube, DS, Wii and Wii U, but to celebrate 25º Pokémon’s birthday, will arrive on the Nintendo Switch on April 30.

If you haven’t played during the day, Pokémon Snap is the best: You are a photographer and your job (I think it’s your job?) is to travel taking pictures of Pokémon. That’s basically it. You take timid pocket monsters out of desserts, jungles and other environments, and your photos get points based on composition. If it is as good as the original, it will be much better than anything you will ever do. Check out the new trailer and you’ll see.

Definition of the week: “Hype house”

Meme-based presidential candidate and aspiring mayor of New York City, Andrew Yang, recently said that part of his plan for Gotham involves encouraging “trendy houses” to move to the city. If you’re too busy “having a job” and “living your life” to know what a hype house is, here’s the explanation: Young influencers and social media accountants have moved into expensive mansions together to collaborate artfully, post tons of TikTok Videos and annoy your wealthy neighbors. Think of it as Andy Warhol’s factory, but with less heroin and nothing as cool as The Velvet Underground.

“Hype house” was coined in December, when 19 of the most influential people at TikTok moved to a Spanish-style mansion in Los Angeles and called themselves “Hype House”. It is now the generic term for any of hundreds of similar deals across the country, be it a bunch of players on YouTube, a pride of Instagram influencers or a TikTok aviary. The trend for Internet users to live together dates back to 2014, when YouTubers invaded the chic neighborhoods of Los Angeles and never left, and like everything young people do, it is boring and terrible. Wait, I mean, it’s amazing and the best!

This week on Internet cats: Cats vs. technology

Cats have been a staple of the internet since the late 1940s and, this week, our feline friends are doing a great show on Reddit. O Cats vs. Subreddit technology was originally formed in 2014, but for reasons known only to the Internet gods, it is exploding in January 2021. This fast-growing subreddit features videos and pictures of cats sitting on hot laptops, find out how water coolers work, or trying to outsmart your automatic feeder. In other words, there are cats in it, and cats are very good. Especially when they’re on the internet and I don’t have to get their shit out of a laundry box.

Viral video of the week: Ultra unboxing

Viral videos that people are really share this week are Capitol rioters bragging about committing crimes, smiling silly as they steal pulpits and inciting violence, but this is all types of depression, so instead, we’re going to calm our shattered nerves with some Unbox Therapy! Unpacking videos are an oddly hypnotic subgenre of YouTube videos, where someone opens a box with a new product and shows the content, and Unbox Therapy’s latest release is an epic. It featured the entire Samsung Galaxy S21 product line, including the Ultra 5G S21, Galaxy S21, oe S21 +, in addition to its Galaxy Buds headset. It’s 22 minutes of hardcore, uncensored unboxing, where cell phones are removed from their packaging and displayed in crystal clear HD. You can see every connector port, every charger cable, every camera lens …my God, when he removes that protective plastic sheet from the display panel …
