South Carolina football may have an important database back in 2021.
When former South Carolina football coach Will Muschamp was fired in the middle of the season, several Gamecock defenders opted out of the last three games of the year. Two of those defenders were Jaycee Horn and Israel Mukuamu, who revealed their intentions to pursue professional careers. Horn is seen by most as a first round selection, while Mukuamu will likely be chosen on the second or third day of the draft.
An opt-out, however, has yet to announce its plans for the 2021 season. Security RJ Roderick missed the team’s last three games in 2020, but an Instagram post on Thursday makes it appear that the secondary member will return to the squad. South Carolina for a fourth season.
Roderick posted a photo of you in a Gamecock uniform with the caption, “I can’t RUN with anyone I don’t hang out with. And I can’t SHINE with anyone I wasn’t in the DARK with. 1 more … #HometownHero. “
While many may be upset about the way Roderick came out last year, his return should be welcomed by both fans and staff. He adds depth and experience to a defensive backfield that lost five players in the off season.
The native of Summerville, SC, has been one of the pillars of the team since his first year, accumulating 134 tackles in the last three seasons. He also recorded two interceptions, two forced fumbles and five tackles behind the line of scrimmage.
Gamecocks are seriously thin in high school, so any body helps, especially if the new defensive coordinator Clayton White plans to install his 4-2-5 scheme. Roderick could possibly take into account the “SPUR” position, which is more of a security / linebacker hybrid, and could maximize Roderick’s tackle skills while limiting his coverage time.
Coach Shane Beamer did not confirm Roderick’s return, but did mention that he has been in contact with each of the 2020 opt-outs. Putting him back in the group is a huge victory for the defensive unit.
