A constant for Pittsburgh Steelers coach Mike Tomlin during his tenure with the Steelers has been a level of stubbornness that is almost impossible to change. Whether on a micro level within a game or something more philosophical, Tomlin historically has no desire to adapt.
Instead, we attended a press conference after a press conference, where Tomlin talks about execution and there is no need for major changes. But it looks like everything is about to change.
There is a real possibility, based on recent events, that Steelers will replace up to six technical assistants in this off-season. Coming out of a 12-4 season, this may seem unusual. But when you consider how far this team has fallen in the last six games, including a loss in the first round of the playoffs, it puts the season in perspective, especially that 11-0 start.
But today’s announcement gives hope that Tomlin is growing as a coach. It is he finally admitting that it is time to bring this team to the present with new ideas and new concepts. A new perspective on the game that may not arrive soon.
However, it is also about self-preservation. Tomlin understands that in the last 10 years, his performance has not lived up to the expectations of fans and this franchise. Tomlin has the opportunity to save and even build his legacy and these moves will decide how Tomlin will be remembered.
