The 2021 Scout Cookies season has finally arrived

The year has just begun and we are already entering the best feeding season ever. Is it fruit ripening on a vine somewhere sunny and idyllic? Are the golden fields of oats ready to be harvested, mother? No, children. It is even better than that. it is Girl Scout Cookie Season.

This year, for some strange reason, specifically terrible, your local Girl Scout troop has to be creative in selling its crop of cookies while maintaining a social distance of over six feet. Normally, I would receive text messages from friends with children saying, “Dennis, do you want Girl Scout cookies?” My typical response is to scream at the top of my lungs while running in circles, scaring our cat, Nugget. Hell, yes, I want cookies. And this year? Screw it. Give me all of them.

O 2021 Schedule is largely similar to previous years, so expect to see your favorites like fine candies, lemonades, clovers (cookies), caramel deLites (Samoas), Do-si-dos (peanut butter sandwich), tagalongos (butter pies) peanuts), Chip chocolate, Toffee-tastic and Girl Scout S’mores.

toast, yes, cookies

However, say hello to a new cookie this year! This is Toast-Yay! ™, which tastes like French toast. Does that mean they taste like cream and maple syrup? I will have to find out for myself, in the most difficult way, by eating them.

The staff of The Takeout was intrigued by the name Toast-Yay! ™. Our line of questioning was rampant: why the hyphen? (We are writers, first of all.) Why does the word “yay” complete with an exclamation mark? How do you pluralize (“Toasts-Yay!”?)? And maybe a young girl scout created that mysterious name? The Girl Scouts of America sent this response:

“The new Toast-Yay! cookie presents a modern and fresh touch to the classic french toast, bringing its delicious flavor beyond the breakfast table. The name was created to be a play on words for “toast”, which evokes the warmth and joy that we believe people will associate with this new flavor inspired by French toast. ‘Toast’ is based on the unique shape of the biscuit toast and the attributes of French Toast, and ‘yay!’ celebrates joy – the joy that Girl Scout cookies bring to consumers and how Girl Scouts create moments of joy by using their cookie earnings to support their communities and donate cookies to frontline workers and local causes.

That answer may be a little less Willy Wonka than I imagined, but I think it all makes sense.

As you can imagine, this year’s cookie sales will be slightly different, with yet another online delivery system in place. You can place orders online through the mobile app (Scouts have come a long way) and now also through Grubhub. Limited locations will do Grubhub deliveries, with all orders over $ 15 receiving cookies free until February 14th.

If you don’t know any girl scouts in person, you don’t need to cry. Girl scouts have a nearest troop locator on your website, and any requests you make will go to that troop, and the funds will go to things like scouting activities or will be donated to a local organization. These orders are open for delivery nationwide from February 1st. And you can still see Girl Scouts in person at tables set up outside retail stores, as usual, depending on your area’s COVID-19 guidelines.

Something I didn’t really know is that the Cookie Girl Scout season runs from January to April. I always thought it was an amorphous period when the mystical Scout Council made a mysterious decision, like the elusive McRib. So make sure you buy a bunch of cookies at once, which is what I always do. You can always store a pack of fine candies in the freezer for a chef-level move.
