A statue of Dolly Parton can be erected at the Tennessee Capitol

Earlier this week, Tennessee deputy John Mark Windle proposed to erect a statue of Parton that will remain on Capitol grounds “to acknowledge it for all that it has contributed to this state”. If ordered, Parton’s sculpture will face the historic Ryman Auditorium, a music venue where she has played throughout her career.

If approved, the statue would be paid for by the “Dolly Parton fund”, which would include gifts, grants and other donations. The public would also have a say in the design of the statue, according to Windle’s design. CNN has contacted Windle for comment and is waiting for a response.

A sculpture by Parton would be a decidedly less controversial addition to the Tennessee State Capitol, which housed Confederate monuments.

In June 2020, state historians moved to remove a bust of the Confederate general and Ku Klux member Klan Nathan Bedford Forrest from the Capitol and relocate it off-site, but state lawmakers objected to the measure, Tennessean said.

Parton did not comment publicly on the proposal. CNN has contacted its representatives and is waiting for a response.

But to feel Parton’s love for his home state, just listen to his 1973 classic about his rural creation, “My Tennessee Mountain Home”.

“At my home in the mountains of Tennessee

Life is as peaceful as a baby’s sigh

At my home in the mountains of Tennessee

Crickets sing in the nearby fields. “
