Super Nintendo World, the theme area for Mario and friends at Universal Studios Japan, was scheduled to open next month, on February 4. However, due to the declared state of emergency in Osaka, this will not happen.

This is not the first time the park has been delayed. It was originally scheduled for an opening in the summer of 2020, but following last year’s state of emergency, it was pushed back.

The last announcement was made earlier today at USJ’s official site:

The grand opening of Super Nintendo World has been postponed.

We will announce the new opening date shortly after the Osaka prefecture’s state of emergency is suspended.

A preview was performed to the park last November, showing visitors what to expect.

As covid-19 cases continue to increase in Japan, a state of emergency was declared yesterday for Osaka and the neighboring prefectures. This comes after a similar announcement was done last week for the greater Tokyo area and as a new variant of the new coronavirus was recently discovered in Haneda Airport.

The current state of emergency declaration for Osaka, for Japan it ends on February 7.
