All good things must end. That’s right, one of Black Twitter’s favorite television shows to incite discussion will be ending soon.
HBO confirmed that Insecurein the next fifth season will be the last. How Variety Reports, Season 5 is scheduled to begin production later this month and will open later this year.
“Issa turned insecurity into an iconic form of comedy,” said Amy Gravitt, executive vice president of HBO Programming, in a statement. “The show is as incisive as it is sincere and has resonated strongly with its audience because of the deeply personal work that Issa, Prentice, Melina, the cast and the writers put into it. This talented team has designed a brilliant final season for Insecure and we hope to have many more stories to tell with this unique group of employees. “
From the HBO press release sent to The root:
The series stars Emmy nominee, Golden Globe and NAACP Image Award nominee, who heads the cast, and the new season will continue to follow our favorite characters as they evaluate their relationships, new and old, in an effort to find out who and what comes with them in this next phase of their lives.

Well, there it is! This news is probably not a surprise to those of us who have been paying attention. This is the perfect time for the series to end – especially considering the shocking finale of season 4. Plus, there’s the obvious – the co-creator and star of the series is fucking busy! Either managing a record label, teaching a MasterClass, Rae is doing everything – hell, just look for her tag on this same site for all things, as it is too much to list! And she is in the background preparing projects while you read this!
Speaking of fucking busy, it was announced on Wednesday that co-star Yvonne Orji will be developing a half-hour autobiographical comedy First generation (which she is working on for a while now!), produced by Oprah Winfrey and David Oyelowo.
I was already curious, but now that the next season will be its last season, I’m sure the drama will increase even more. Issa Dee finally going to be safe (Ba-dum-tssss! Sorry, I had to do it)? Will we have a surprise return from Daniel (Y’lan Noel)? Will Lawrence’s new baby with Condola (Christina Elmore) wears a Best Buy polo shirt instead of the burrito blankets that every hospital already has for newborn babies? Will Molly (Orji) finally hear from her damn therapist? Will Andrew (Alexander Hodge) try to resolve his relationship with Molly? Shit, will Dro (Sarunas J. Jackson) come back and wreak havoc on Molly’s life? Will Thug Yoda (Tristen J. Winger) slip up and say a “C” word, causing Inglewood to implode? Isn’t Nathan (Kendrick Sampson) extremely relaxed? Will Tiffany (Amanda Seales) have the support she needs for her postpartum depression? Will Kelli (Natasha Rothwell) continue to be everyone’s favorite?
Find out next time on… Black Twitter. Oh, and HBO, duh. We will be ready.
