Twitter Decided that Barbie is Queer and Is Glorious

I love going on Twitter to see something confirmed that I always knew in my heart to be true: Barbie is queer. That is at least the consensus today, when the internet discovered that the iconic doll character may like women more than her traditional image might suggest. Barbie is a lesbian? Is Barbie bisexual? Did we all know something when we made our dolls get married (usually naked) when we were kids? If a few million memes are to be believed, then yes.

Today’s Twitter storm “Barbie is a lesbian” came mainly thanks in part to Twitter rediscovering a 2017 photo spread with Barbie and a doll representing fashion blogger Aimee Song in “Love Wins” T-shirts, looking a lot like girlfriends. I mean, it looks like they already adopted a pet together, which is a weird woman.

Well, more than three years later, the image and others resurfaced and Twitter became gay. And it was great.

Song herself joined in the fun.

And it’s not just the Barbie doll whose naughty trends were catching the attention of the general public. In her various films, Barbie does seem to have a lot of “friends” as they say.

Like a mother who watched Barbie Dolphin Magic a hundred times with my little girl, I immediately agreed. Barbie spends the entire film ignoring her friendly friend himbo Ken in favor of making eyes of heart for a beautiful mermaid named Isla (pronounced Ayla). They’re gay!

Harold. They are lesbians.

The Barbie universe seems very full of strangeness, if we are honest, because we have known about Ken for years too.

Now, I’m sure there will be some people rebelling about this and I would like to remind you that Barbie … is a doll and a fictional character. She is everything we want or need her to be. If you want your doll to be gay, it is. Whether your Barbie is bisexual or pansexual, that’s the truth of it. For children today and in the past, Barbie represents what they can and can be anything they want.

Barbie is a rocket scientist. Or a ballerina. Or a fairy. Or a lesbian. Barbie is everything you need her to be, and for many of us and our children … this is a queer heroine that we can all love. And as your shirt says: love wins!
