CNN will close its airport network, which provided news to airport monitors across the country.
CNN President Jeff Zucker wrote in a memo that the network would end on March 31.
“The sharp decline in airport traffic due to COVID-19, coupled with all the new ways people are consuming content on their personal devices, has lessened the need,” wrote Zucker.
The network has been operating for 30 years.
“I’m sure most of us have a story to tell about what airport we were at when we heard some great news,” wrote Zucker. “Be proud to have helped share some incredible stories with millions of people over the past three decades.”
CNN’s Oliver Darcy was the first to report the news.
The network delivered personalized news to nearly 60 airports in the United States. The content was a mix of news, weather and lifestyle programming. The network had a captive audience, although it increasingly consumed videos on their personal devices.
It was not clear how many employees would be affected by the closure. CNN ended its Great Big Story digital venture in September.
