The Washington Football Team started with four different defenders during the 2020 season and none of them left coach Ron Rivera feeling decided about the future of his position.
It seemed like a more stable situation coming in the season. Rivera gave Dwayne Haskins most of the team’s representatives during the training camp, but he was released after four weeks in favor of Kyle Allen. During an appearance in 106.7 The Fan, Rivera said she regrets limiting competition during the summer.
“The biggest thing I would have done would be to create a few more opportunities by mixing everyone around,” said Rivera, via NBCSportsWashington.com. “Rather than saying, ‘OK, I’m going to just take one guy and do this.’ I think now, in retrospect, and again, retrospective is 20/20, I would say. What I am saying is that I made a mistake and I am confessing it, and that is the truth. To be so simple, that’s what I’m saying. I’m just being honest. “
Haskins is gone and there is no obvious answer to the future of the position with Allen, Alex Smith and Taylor Heinicke. This image will probably look different when the team is back in the field, but there may not be a clear number 1 and that should make the competition look different this time.
