In just over a month from now, Google is expected to launch the first Android 12 Developer Preview. Although Google has not confirmed any details yet, the folks at XDA Developers found evidence to suggest that Android 12 may introduce a new application hibernation feature.
According to some code changes sent to AOSP, Google has started working on an application hibernation system service “that manages the application’s hibernation state, a state that applications can enter, which means they are not being actively used and can be optimized for storage. “
Unfortunately, however, changes to the code do not reveal exactly how the feature will work. It remains to be seen whether users will be allowed to choose the applications they want to hibernate manually or whether it will be determined automatically based on the application’s usage statistics. What is also unclear is how hibernated applications will be “optimized for storage”. It is possible for the APK file and other features of hibernated applications to be compressed to free up space.

As noted by XDA Developers, however, commits have not yet been merged, meaning there is no guarantee that the feature will reach Android 12. If Google plans to add the feature to Android 12, further code changes related to the application’s hibernation are likely to be submitted to AOSP soon.
