(CNN) – The Disneyland Resort in Anaheim will soon be Covid-19’s first “super” vaccination site in Orange County, California, officials said on Monday.
The resort will be one of several “super POD” – dispensing points – where thousands of residents can be vaccinated daily, officials said. It will be operational later this week.
“Disneyland Resort, the largest employer in the heart of Orange County, has stepped up to host the county’s first Super POD location – performing a monumental task in our vaccination distribution process,” said Andrew Do, acting chairman of the Board of Directors. County Supervisors Administration, in a statement.
More “POD super sites” will be announced as the deals are finalized, officials said.
The county has a population of about 3.1 million. More than 190,000 people have tested positive for Covid-19 since the start of the pandemic and more than 2,100 have died, according to county data.
About 2,221 people remain hospitalized with the virus, more than 500 of whom are in intensive care units.
The county is vaccinating people who fall into Phase 1a – critical and health workers, as well as people aged 75 and over. Those who meet the criteria must schedule an appointment to be vaccinated at a Super POD location, the county said.
“It is important to vaccinate as many people as possible against Covid-19 and we need space for that,” said supervisor Donald P. Wagner in a statement. “I thank the Disneyland Resort and the city of Anaheim for intensifying the shared effort to protect OC residents from the virus.”
