Gotham Awards 2020: list of winners

“First Cow”, “Nomadland” and “Never Rarely Sometimes Always” were all nominated for Best Picture at Gotham’s 30th Annual Awards.

The 2020-21 award season receives its first outstanding award ceremony with the 30th Annual Gotham Award. Eleven competitive awards will be given to the previous year’s best films, performances and television series. Feature films with several nominees include “First Cow”, “Never Rarely Sometimes Always”, “Nomadland” and “Santa Frances”. All nominees for Best Feature Film this year are films directed by women, the first in the 30-year history of the Gotham Award.

In addition to the 11 competitive categories, the 30th Gotham Award will also award five honors throughout the ceremony, including the late Chadwick Boseman (Tribute to the actor, posthumously), Viola Davis (Tribute to the actress), Steve McQueen (Tribute to the director), Ryan Murphy (Industry Tribute), and the inaugural Ensemble Tribute for the cast of “The Trial of the Chicago 7”, by Aaron Sorkin.

The first prize of the night went to Kingsley Ben-Adir, who appeared in “One Night in Miami”, which appeared on camera in a hotel in London. The actor used his brief acceptance speech to shoot his nominated colleague Sidney Flanigan for “Never Rarely Sometimes Always”, calling his performance “excellent”. Flanigan won the Best Actress award at the beginning of this New York Critics Circle award season.

Radha Blank was speechless when accepting the Best Screenplay award for her feature film “The Forty-Year-Old Version” (“Holy shit, holy shit”, she said at the beginning of her speech, “I’m kind of shocked”), who drew with Dan Sallitt’s “Fourteen”. The award for Best Shared Screenplay was the second draw of the night, after Best Documentary went to “Time” and “A Thousand Cuts”.

In her Viola Davis Tribute to Actress speech, she reflected on the importance of starring in August Wilson’s adaptation, “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom”, for which she is the pioneer in the Oscar nomination. “Whites have always become the guardians of the black experience; well, I am very honored to be part of a legacy of autonomy and agency. August Wilson was able to narrate not only the history of Black America, but also to show you our humanity. How we loved. How we dream. How we hope, how crazy we get, our mood. Thank you for recognizing August’s work through me. “

Nicole Kidman appeared during the virtual broadcast to pay tribute to Ryan Murphy, recipient of the Tribute to Industry, saying: “He is talented behind the words, a proverbial triple threat: a producer, a writer and a director for television, film and theater. The real heart of Ryan’s work is his ability to highlight all types of people. He has been doing this for decades. ”Murphy used his speech to encourage productions, large and small, to continue creating inclusive scenarios in front of and behind the camera.

The cast of “The Trial of the Chicago 7”, including Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Sacha Baron Cohen, recorded a clipped message from several locations to celebrate their Joint Tribute award. “Half a century after the events of ‘The Chicago Trial 7’, peaceful protesters are again being met with tear gas … political impasses continue to plague our own leaders, the echoes have been unmistakable,” said the cast’s message. “At the very least, it reminds us of the work that still needs to be done to reduce the divide. ‘The Chicago 7 Trial’ happened then, but it is happening now and it is destined to continue happening until the United States fulfills its ideal of freedom and justice for all ”.

Oscar winner “12 Years a Slave”, Lupita Nyong’o, paid tribute to Director Steve McQueen in a pre-recorded video, saying, “He’s interested in what history and imagination have to say about who we are … In ‘Small Ax’, he is talking to the story, but also telling us about his story. The connection between Steve’s story and the broader social context is what makes these films so resonant. They are a timely reminder of what has changed since then and, more importantly, what hasn’t changed. These films inform, educate, inspire, leave us hopeful, sad and happy. Only Steve can capture this alchemy of raw and hybrid emotions. “
